American Express Gold Card offers bonus rewards points for customers who spend using the charge card.

A range of offers for new Preferred Rewards Gold Card members are available such as 20,000 free Membership Reward points and double points on travel related spending.

When customers spend £1,000 on the Card in the first three months of the account opening, they receive 20,000 Membership Reward points.

This number of points could pay in full for two return flights to selected European cities with British Airways, or an upgrade to premium economy with Virgin Atlantic.

The points customers receive when using the card for travel related purchases are available for the lifetime of the card.  The travel purchases include flights, hotels, trains, cruises and car hire, as well as purchases made abroad.

For those concerned about the cost of petrol, American Express Gold Card users can earn double points at all major supermarkets and petrol stations in the first year of account opening.

Card membership will be given for free for the first three months, which saves customers £25.

The points can be redeemed through major frequent flyer programmes to get cheap flights abroad, towards hotel stays in over 25,000 properties worldwide, and any rail travel with Eurostar.

Membership reward points can also be redeemed for gifts and experiences, from M&S vouchers to spa days.

Charge Cards

A charge card aims to give customers better control over their spending, as it has a limitless spending capacity, but the user is required to pay the balance off in full each month.

So unlike a credit card, users do not top up expensive interest on their outstanding balance, and unlike a debit card, the money they spend does not come out of their account straight away, giving greater flexibility over spending.
